Spied! Jaguar XE Mule Undergoing Testing

The car above may look like any other Jaguar XK roadster from a distance, but a closer look suggests it’s actually a mule for the company’s new sub-XK sports car, which is reportedly known as the Jaguar XE.

How can we tell? If you take a look at the photos, providedby our friends at Motor Trend, the XK’s rear fender flares are hiding what appears to be a wider track out back, and the front clip has been modified as well. There are a few signature prototype touches as well, like the lack of badges, and a modified front grille that doesn’t give anything away. The whole package finishes with a rear lip spoiler that looks quite a bit taller than the one on the existing model.

What is the mule hiding under the hood? It’s hard to say for sure, but we’ve heard that the new Jaguar XE–set to be some sort of entry-level roadster to fight the mighty Porsche Boxster–will feature a selection of V-6 engines, perhaps including a supercharged version that delivers up to 450 horsepower. There’s also talk that the 5.0-liter V-8, which currently serves in all of Jaguar’s present model lines, could also work its way underhood.

Regardless, the Jaguar XE will almost certainly ride on an all-new modular platform, which will ultimately be used in a slew of new models. Previous reports suggested this architecture will spawn a new “baby Jag”/ BMW 3 Series fighter, along with the next XF and XK models.
