Our spy shooters caught what looks like a new version of the Audi R8 GT testing. Audi already updated all other versions of the R8 supercar for the 2014 model year, so it stands to reason that some tweaks and changes are also in store for the racy GT model.
The previous Audi R8 GT followed a simple formula: it had less weight, more power, firmer suspension, and improved aerodynamics over regular versions of the supercar. The 5.2-liter V-10 engine produced 560 hp and 398 lb-ft, increases of 35 hp and 9 lb-ft compared to standard V-10-powered R8s. Now it looks like Audi is ready to up the ante again.
The test car snapped by our spy photographers reprises the front winglets and carbon-fiber rear wing of the old Audi R8 GT, although now the wing is significantly taller. The split five-spoke wheels hide enlarged brake calipers and what appear to be lightweight and fade-resistant carbon-ceramic brake discs. A new front splitter and rear diffuser complete the visible aerodynamic upgrades. The car also wears the same burnt orange paint used to launch the previous Audi R8 GT.
Given that Audi increased the power output on standard R8 models for 2014, this R8 GT could produce as much as 600 hp. The standard Audi R8 V-10 produces 525 hp and 391 lb-ft, while the V-10 Plus model pumps out 550 hp and 398 lb-ft, so it’s not unreasonable to expect an updated R8 GT to offer somewhere between 550 and 600 hp.
We expect Audi to officially reveal the updated R8 GT later this year.
