Jaguar has been aggressively working to expand its market share across the globe, and the next portfolio expansion will come in the form of a new “baby” Jaguar to battle with the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Codenamed X760, the smaller Jaguar has been rumored to wear the XS badge when it goes on sale. As we previously reported, the XS will initially be offered as a traditional four-door sedan in 2015 and then add a crossover variant in 2016.
Integral to the XS’ development is the use of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA), which made its production debut with the new 2013 Range Rover. Don’t let the XF bodywork fool you – an all-new XF is due later next year (before the XS is revealed) and will move over to PLA from the old Ford DEW98 platform it currently rides on. It’s no surprise that the XS and XF will share underpinnings, as they are expected to share some powertrains, too: namely the 2.0-liter turbo-four and 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engines and the option of either rear- or all-wheel drive.
The reason that we can tell this is an XS mule – and not one for the next XF – is because it’s clearly much shorter than a standard XF. The rear doors look to be a bit shorter and the door handles have inched forward a bit. We can also see through the false grille to an intercooler that is nowhere near the supposed front clip of this car, and the riveted-together bumper curves under dramatically to reach the exhaust. The track of this car is also noticeably shorter than the body panels.
Expect to know more about the 2015 Jaguar XS as development continues and the car’s debut draws closer.
