Spied: 2014 BMW X5 Spotted in Early Testing

BMW is already working on the next generation of its X5 SUV, as revealed by these spy photos from our eagle-eyed colleagues at Motor Trend. The pictures from Germany show the 2014 X5 testing with a heavy coating of camouflage tape.

Based on these pictures, we can expect the 2014 X5 to have basically the same SUV shape as the current model, though with a more pronounced shoulder line. The new X5, however, will be based on a new chassis derived from that of the 5 Series sedan. The platform change is designed to help BMW’s heavy SUV shed weight. It’s unknown whether the current model’s engine lineup will carryover. The 2012 X5 xDrive35i offers a 300-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine; the xDrive50i has a 400-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8; and the xDrive35d has a 265-hp, 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six.

In addition to standard models, we expect there will be a thrifty ActiveHybrid and go-fast X5 M version of the 2014 X5. Production will continue to take place at BMW’s plant in South Carolina, which will also receive $900 million in upgrades to add capacity and start building the future X4 crossover.
