Spied: 2013 Nissan Titan Testing in Michigan

The Nissan Titan might not get any significant upgrades for another few years, but we caught a few shots of what appears to be a 2013-model-year model testing on a Michigan highway and wearing a couple of subtle tweaks.

We’ve previously reported that the Nissan Titan isn’t slated for any serious updates (or a replacement model) until at least 2014, thanks in part to last year’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Still, it looks like Nissan is gifting the Titan with a couple of minor exterior updates to keep it as fresh as possible until then.

As far as the updates we can see, the Nissan’s front bumper foglamp surrounds are smaller and rounder, and the headlight assemblies are slightly different as well. Out back, Nissan changed the rear tailgate release, which now has space for a rear-view camera, and the top of the tailgate looks a bit flared.

This particular Nissan Titan prototype was likely one of the lower trim levels, seeing as the rear tailgate’s tape clearly bubbles over an S, SV, or SL badge as opposed to the top-spec Pro-4X trim level that currently sits atop the Titan range. The tester also lacked the body cladding and running boards from the older model, although it’s unclear if Nissan will eventually stick those items back on the new truck. The same can be said for the old truck’s large “Titan” badging on the doors.

The current Nissan Titan, for the record, came out in 2004. It currently features a 317-hp 5.6-liter V-8 five-speed automatic transmission and available four-wheel drive. While there’s been talk of Nissan downsizing gasoline engines or even a turbodiesel powerplant, both of those things will have to wait a little while longer: the Titan is conspicuously absent from the Nissan “five new models under wraps” tv commercial, so don’t expect any bombshells soon. Then again, with a new Titan years away, any updates to the aging truck would certainly be welcome.
