Spied! 2012 BMW M5 Caught on the Streets

We’re hotly anticipating BMW’s next-generation M5, and BMW seems to keep teasing us with camouflaged prototypes. Our friends at Motor Trend just captured another of the monster sedans — wearing camo, of course — undergoing cold weather testing.

Apart from final interior and exterior styling details, there’s not much we don’t know about the next-generation M5. It’s been confirmed that the car will indeed ditch the last M5’s 5.0-liter V-10 in favor of a 575-horsepower version of the twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 used in the X5 and X6 M. We’ve also heard that engine will be mated with a beefed-up variant of BMW’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, promising crisp, instantaneous shifts.

Seeing as we don’t even know the finalized styling, it’s fitting there’s some speculation surrounding the body panels’ construction. BMW is investing heavily in carbon fiber for its MegaCity electric vehicle, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the lithe composite is heavily used in the new performance sedan to shave a few pounds from the curb weight.

Whatever materials are used, however, we know the M5 will pack some serious power, and that BMW’s engineers are quite adept at making the most of each horsepower. We look forward to seeing the next M5 in all its glory at some point in the near future, but until BMW pulls the wild camo off the car, check out the full line of spy photos over at Motor Trend.
