While there are no doubt some enticing cars at Volkswagen’s Wörthersee meet this year, such as the Audi A3 Clubsport Quattro and Skoda Citijet, we can’t help but be interested in some of the special-equipment show cars. Who wouldn’t want an Audi Q3 TDI crossover with an on-board tent, or a thumping Power DJ Volkswagen Amarok pickup with a 5000-watt sound system?
The Audi Q3 has been on sale in Europe since mid-2011, but never before has it come with a kayak rack and a concept “Q3 camping tent.” In addition to the Q3 TDI’s 177-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine, the crossover includes a high-wind-resistant (43.5-mph) tent that can be set up either separate from the vehicle, or attached to the open rear hatch for extra security. The tent can be rolled out, pumped up, and secured in about seven minutes. For outdoorsy sporting types who favor the luxury and efficiency of a diesel Audi, the tent-toting Audi Q3 is a must-have.
While last year’s event brought us a high-powered Volkswagen Amarok R pickup, this latest Amarok concept gets a high-powered sound system. Dubbed the Volkswagen Power Amarok, the concept pickup gets a 5000-watt speaker system combining parts from Allen & Heath, MC, Pioneer, and Void Acoustics. The ridiculous mobile boom box has a full bed of sound-amplifying components when fully assembled, which has been specially designed to fit together in a “compact cube” to keep the party rolling. It’s not all thumping bass and treble, though, as the Volkswagen Amarok Power also looks the part thanks to its 22-inch wheels, dynamic metallic sheen gray paint, and orange decals. The contrasting orange color scheme also adorns the brake calipers and interior leather, balancing the black seating surfaces and black Alcantara interior surfacing.
The two Volkswagen Group concepts can be see at VW’s annual Wörthersee meet on May 29.
