Post-recession, it seems as if the market for ultraexclusive, high-dollar supercars is slowly returning to an economy of better days. With the waiting lists for the Porsche 918 Spyder and McLaren MP4-12C healthily exceeding targets, is the bubble for premium motoring beginning to expand again?
Porsche, which hasn’t made a decision whether or not to build the 918 Spyder hybrid roadster, needs at least 1000 solid orders to make it work. McLaren plans 1000 copies of the MP4-12C coupe for the first year of production, and its manufacturing facility is equipped to build up to 4000 units a year. Demand, however, is up to 2700 pre-orders for the MP4-12C, and possibly 2000 for the 918 Spyder.
Although the price of entry for the two will likely differ by a sum of two MP4-12Cs — Porsche is looking to charge $630,000, while the McLaren stickers around $225,000 — it’s not exactly chump change.
But which supercar grabs at your heartstrings and rips at them with over 500 horsepower? Cost aside, which do you prefer?
