Hot on the heels of news about the potential return of Mazda’s RX-7 comes news that Nissan is looking at possibly bringing back a car reminiscent of the Euro-market 200SX. However, with several coupes already in Nissan’s lineup, the Japanese automaker faces new challenges to developing the spiritual successor of the car we knew in the U.S. as the 240SX.
According to a report from Britain’s Autocar, Nissan is contemplating a return to the small, rear-wheel-drive, four-cylinder sports car market. Insiders say the car is supposed to be a follow-up to the European market 200SX. In the States, we’ve seen a range of Nissan coupes with the SX moniker, from a late-’80s rear-wheel-drive coupe to a Sentra-based, front-wheel-drive coupe badged 200SX. We got the second-generation of the car badged as the 240SX in the U.S.
Nissan’s reborn 240SX faces several development hurdles, including finding a suitable chassis for the car. One chassis under consideration is a shortened version of Nissan’s FM platform that currently underpins the 370Z. However, that chassis may prove too heavy for the car’s intent to be a lightweight, fuel efficient, rear-wheel-drive sports car.
If the car is developed and goes into production, it will slot into Nissan’s lineup below the rear-wheel-drive 370Z. It is intended to be a direct competitor to Mazda’s planned RX-9, as well as the Volkswagen Scirocco, and the Renault Mègane coupe. Seeing the car’s intended competition, it’s unlikely that the reborn 200SX will make it Stateside.
