An ad featuring the 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio features what might be the most talked about photos in the upcoming ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. Why? Because the print ad showcases a life-sized replica of the hot hatch made up of female models who are essentially naked. It’s creative, it’s provocative, and there’s an accompanying video that documents the photo shoot from start to finish.
The ad is completely appropriate for the magazine. If you’re unaware of ESPN’s Body Issue, the sports magazine describes it as a medium to “admire the vast potential of the human form,” and to “unapologetically stand in awe of the athletes who’ve pushed their physiques to profound frontiers.” It encourages readers to “gawk” at what are essentially nude photos of today’s most popular and fit athletes.
That said, recreating a Fiat Abarth with human bodies was no walk in the park, which is why the females who participated in the shoot were specifically chosen for their athletic abilities and physique. As the video shows, the models were required to maintain challenging poses for long periods of time. And after months of planning and many hours of photo shoots, the effort resulted in a pretty convincing photo of a human-formed black 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio complete with red accents and the signature Scorpion badges.
