Sketches Show First New Datsun Model

Revived brand to offer low-cost models in developing markets.

Nissan announced in March 2012 that it would revive the Datsun brand as a new foray for developing car markets such as India and Russia. Now, sketches have emerged showing what the first Datsun vehicle might look like before the official unveiling that will take place July 15 in New Delhi, India.

The first sketch shows a distinctive grille with a new Datsun emblem similar in shape to the Nissan logo and the second sketch, which shows the overall shape of the car, suggests a five-door hatchback body style. Expect Datsun models to be built around a low price point, with simple interiors, durable materials, and limited comfort and convenience features.

Nissan says the first Datsun model will be aimed at the Indian market, where it will go up against top sellers like the Suzuki Alto and the Hyundai i10, along with Indian offerings from home market automakers Indica and Mahindra. Subsequent Datsun models will be developed for individual markets, including Indonesia, Russia, and South Africa.

The Datsun brand was originally phased out in the mid-1980s. The revived Datsun will join Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand as the third marque housed under the Nissan corporate umbrella. Nissan says the first Datsun vehicles will go on sale starting in 2014.
