We’ve heard talk of Infiniti offering an electric vehicle for quite some time, but this new sketch, released during a press conference this morning at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, gives us our best look yet at the forthcoming EV.
Officials have publicly floated the possibility of an Infiniti EV since late 2009, but this image, published during the company’s press conference in Frankfurt, gives a pretty good look at what we can expect from the finished product. We’d seen a shadowy sketch of the car before, but this rendering provides a little more detail. Seeing as Infiniti touted its recent Etherea concept as a peek at a future entry-level car, it’s not too surprising to see many cues — notably the Sigma-shaped C-pillar and strong character lines extending from the front fenders — worked into this particular design.
Infiniti is still shying away from mentioning what lurks beneath that Etherea-inspired skin, but the car is expected to ride upon a modified version of the Nissan Leaf’s B/C-segment architecture. Likewise, powertrain — including the 80-kW motor and lithium-ion battery pack — is also likely to be shared between the two models.
Details are still forthcoming, but Infiniti officials say the car will be launched in 2014 — perfect timing, it seems, for Infiniti’s premium EV to square off against a similar model promised by Cadillac.
