Scion Teases Sports Car Concept, Is it Another Toyota FT-86?

Is Scion bringing a sports car — perhaps an iteration of Toyota’s sleek FT-86 coupe — to the New York show? You’ll have to pull out your magnifying glass, but a new teaser video issued this morning suggests it might.

Although the clip shows few details of the car, it does show the concept under very dim lighting. Darkness obscures most of the vehicle, but when the limited lighting used does suggest the show car looks almost identical to the Toyota FT-86 II concept that was shown earlier this year in Geneva.

Rumor has it Scion’s take on the FT-86 may be dubbed the FR-S. That we’re unsure of, but we do know the entire FT-86 family is the fruit of a relationship between Toyota and Subaru to produce a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. Subaru used its Geneva stand to preview its own version of the coupe, giving us a clear look at the turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four-cylinder engine that will likely power every variant, regardless of the nameplate affixed.

Toyota previously suggested that the FT-86 II concept was rather close to a production-ready model, so there’s a good chance that a Scion-badged variant could suggest we’re nearing the launch of a Toyota-built, rear-drive sports coupe at long last. For now, you can take a look at the teaser video below, but be sure to check back next week for the full details on the Scion concept and all of our 2011 New York auto show coverage.
