After selling 86 Scion FR-S sport coupes last month as part of the “First 86” pre-sale program, the automaker announced that the car is available in dealerships across the country this week. The BRZ already hit showrooms last month, with 271 units sold.
The 2013 Scion FR-S is the U.S.-spec version of the Toyota GT-86 that was first shown as the Toyota FT-86 concept, which paid homage to the 1980s rear-drive Corolla AE86. Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer-four cylinder, the lightweight FR-S features a low center of gravity — rivaling some exotic sports cars — and near perfect front-to-rear weight distribution.
While Subaru helped develop the car and is selling its own version as the Subaru BRZ, each automaker tuned the suspension separately. Interior trim and equipment are also unique to each brand. The manual transmission FR-S starts at $24,930 while automatic transmission cars add on an additional $1100. The price undercuts the base BRZ by $1315, but the Scion lacks some equipment such as the Subaru’s standard navigation system.
Both cars come with a 3-year/36,000 mile bumper-to bumper warranty and a 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. Scion also includes Scion Service Boost in the price, which covers factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles as well as 24-hour roadside assistance for two years. The automaker hopes to sell between 10,000 and 20,000 FR-S coupes a year while Subaru plans to import 6000 BRZs a year.
The Toyobaru twins, which take premium fuel, earned an EPA rating of 22/30 mpg city/highway for manual transmission cars and 25/34 mpg for automatic-equipped cars.
