Remember that sculpted, powerful Audi Quattro concept from the 2010 Paris Motor Show? Well, the chances of it reaching production might have gone from slim to none: we hear that Audi has axed the model in favor of developing a(nother) crossover.
It’s been almost exactly two years since we first saw the Ur-Quattro-aping Quattro concept, and in the interim time the car’s production viability has waxed and waned. Individual design elements have moved on to other concepts and cars (including this year’s slate of concepts in Paris), but it looks like the Quattro concept has reached the end of the line.
Car Magazine reports that Audi’s number-crunchers couldn’t make a convincing case for another low-volume sports coupe, especially as the TT and R8 continue into new generations. As Audi found with the Q3, Q5, and Q7, the money’s in crossovers…so that’s what we’re going to get.
Car says that the Quattro’s replacement will be some sort of SUV-coupe, likely based on the Q2; the Q2, in turn, will be based on Audi’s Crosslane concept that debuted at this year’s Paris show. The good news for leadfoots is this: the Q2’s hybrid powertrain will be ditched in favor of an Ur-Quattro-like five cylinder engine (turbocharged, of course), all-wheel drive, and the company’s new seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. Like the Q2 and Crosslane before it, the next Audi Quattro will share some design elements with that 2010 concept, although the final product will sit higher than the Quattro concept. It’s a style we’ve seen before with Audi’s 2001 Steppenwolf concept, shown below.
That only leaves one serious question–what’ll we call it? It could be called the SQ2 (like the current SQ5, shown below), or its hardcore nature could earn it an RS Q2 badge (like the RS Q3 concept, also shown below). Then again, don’t put it past Audi to dust off its Quattro nameplate and affix it on the back, either. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.
