Saleen Automotive is celebrating its long history of performance tuning and motorsports with a new series of special edition models called the Heritage Collection Lineup. This weekend, the first of these models debuted at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway in California: the 2014 Saleen George Follmer Edition Mustang.
The George Follmer Mustang takes its name from the famed racing driver of the 1960s and 70s who not only competed in Formula One and NASCAR, but also piloted the #16 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in the SCCA Trans-Am series. It’s the latter series from which the George Follmer Edition Mustang takes its inspiration with a similar red, white, and black paint scheme. Mechanically, Saleen has tuned the Mustang to an estimated 470-plus horsepower from the 5.0-liter, 302-cubic-inch four-valve V-8 , up from 444 hp in the stock Mustang Boss 302 which was a limited edition for 2012 and 2013 Mustangs. Saleen says the George Follmer Edition Mustang also has a track-tuned suspension and a six-speed manual transmission.
The two other Heritage Collection models will include the Saleen Mark Donohue Edition Camaro, named after another successful SCCA Trans-Am driver of the late 1960s, and the Swede Savage Edition Barracuda which is based on the Dodge Challenger but revives the iconic Plymouth Barracuda moniker.
The Saleen George Follmer Edition Mustang is available for pre-order now, and Saleen says that pricing for each of the Heritage Collection models is estimated to be in the mid-$70,000 range. The Mark Donohue Camaro and Swede Savage Edition Barracuda are set to be released in winter 2013 and early 2014, respectively.
