Rumored: Is Smart Planning to Enter the Scooter Market?

Is there a market for a Smart smaller than the Fortwo? Smart seems to think so. We hear its next project will ride on two wheels, instead of four.

The scooter is billed as a complement to the Fortwo, a foray into emerging markets, and a response to BMW’s project to revive the C1 covered motorcycle. While powertrain details have not been released, a trial run of 500 scooters in Germany will test consumer demand for two-wheeled Smarts.

“Smart was originally established to tackle the need for improved mobility, especially in congested city environments,” an unnamed Mercedes-Benz official told British magazine Autocar. “Up to now we have concentrated our efforts on four-wheel solutions.”

This announcement comes after our first drive of the smart fortwo Electric Drive, which will launch as part of a limited run in a few markets. The scooter’s test run will be part of a project to launch charging stations around Stuttgart, Germany, and may use the automaker’s relationship with global suppliers to launch the scooter around the world.

The scooter is set to be introduced at the Paris Motor Show in September.
