The Rolls-Royce Motor Car Company was officially founded in 1906, but its iconic radiator mascot — the Spirit of Ecstasy — wasn’t crafted and placed on cars until five years after. For those keeping score, 2011 marks the 100th birthday of the iconic emblem, and Rolls plans to commemorate the milestone by building 100 special-edition Phantoms –one for each year of the Spirit’s existence.
Unlike many other special edition models, the commemorative cars — officially known as Spirit of Ecstasy Centenary Collection Phantoms –won’t be identical to one another. Each, however, will offer owners a number of special touches unavailable on other Rolls-Royce models. Up front, the Spirit of Ecstasy itself is cast in silver, while its base is gold plated. The Rolls-Royce emblems applied throughout the car are also unique, as their silver-on-black color scheme is the inverse of the company’s actual logo.
Buyers will be able to select from four exclusive exterior paint colors, including Rhapsody Black, Maiden Blue, Ethereal White Pearl, or Wildflower. Each car will receive twin coachline striping, which incorporates a hand-painted Spirit of Ecstasy. Inside, the Phantoms receive a bespoke silver bezel for the analog dash clock, while an individually numbered, engraved silver plaque is affixed to the center console. Silver inlays can be incorporated into the wood veneers used throughout the cabin, and buyers can also choose to have the leather seating surfaces match the unique exterior color.
The leather surface atop the glove box door is embossed with a quote from Charles Sykes, the sculptor behind the Spirit, about his creation. It reads:
“A graceful little goddess, the Spirit of Ecstasy, who has selected road travel as her supreme delight and alighted on the prow of a Rolls-Royce motor car to revel in the freshness of the air and the musical sound of her fluttering draperies.”
If these changes aren’t enough, each buyer will receive a desk ornament of the figure, which is paired with a certificate of authenticity signed by Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. Pricing hasn’t been announced for the special model, but given the limited production figure, we expect them to move quickly.
