Chicago 2011: 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Revealed

More than a decade since the Camaro Z28 went out of production, Chevrolet has a high-performance Camaro again.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 packs a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 with an estimated 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, mated to a Tremec high-performance six-speed manual. The car is also equipped with a dual-mode exhaust for a signature sound unique to the ZL1.

The ZL1 wears vertical fog lamps, a front splitter for added downforce, a massive power bulge to accommodate the supercharger, and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels.

Chevrolet’s use of the ZL1 badge is not arbitrary, as the name is derived from an all-aluminum racing engine from the late 1960s. In 1969, sixty-nine production-spec Camaros were built with the ZL1 engine, creating a car with a mythical status among enthusiasts and marking the then-pinnacle of high performance in the Camaro.
