Another generation of the Subaru BRZ sports car — twinned with the Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 — is in the works. That’s the word from Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries, who told reporters in Tokyo that the affordable sports car will continue for the foreseeable future.
“If I were to be told that [it was discontinued], I’d pass out,” Yoshinaga told Automotive News. “It’s not going to be just one generation.”
His comments counter recent reports in the Australian press that Toyota 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said his company planned to ditch the joint sports car to pursue a collaboration with BMW on hybrid sports cars.
Contrary to that report, Yoshinaga told AN that Toyota and Subaru will work together on a second generation of the car. However, he reportedly admitted that the Subaru BRZ couldn’t exist alone, as the car’s business case relies on the additional volume of the Toyota/Scion version.
In the U.S., the Subaru BRZ has sold 4295 units through the first six months of this year, while the Scion FR-S enjoyed 7662 sales. In 2013, the FR-S outsold the BRZ by a two-to-one ratio, at 18,327 cars to 8587.
This is far from the first time the companies have publicly sparred over the future of the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. Although Toyota persists in showing its FT-86 Open Concept and hints at the possibility of a four-door version, Subaru’s Yoshinaga told reporters last November neither version would come to fruition.
“I understand well that Toyota is receiving strong requests from the American market for the car,” Yoshinaga told Automotive News. “But the biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards. We make the car, so if we don’t make it, it can’t happen.”
