Report: NHTSA Fines GM for Recall Query Responses

Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) administered a 107-question query to General Motors concerning the recent ignition switch recall involving 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. According to Automotive News, many questions remain unanswered despite GM passing the April 3 deadline, and NHTSA has issued GM a fine of $7000 per day over this deadline without disclosing information.

In a letter sent by the NHTSA, chief counsel Kevin Vincent explained, “GM did not respond to over a third of the requests in the special order by the April 3 deadline.” While the actual financial penalty is not huge, this fine represents NHTSA’s dissatisfaction with GM’s disclosure thus far and highlights the struggle to produce company records detailing how exactly this known defect went on for more than 10 years before resulting in a recall that was administered just this year.

GM did respond to the fine in an emailed statement, though, saying it has “worked tirelessly from the start to be responsive to NHTSA’s special order and has fully cooperated with the agency to help it have a full understanding of the facts.” GM’s statement refers to some 21,000 documents it has produced so far, and notes that NHTSA has agreed to a rolling production schedule that goes past the April 3 deadline. Going forward, GM says it will “continue to provide responses and facts as soon as they become available and hope to go about this in a constructive manner.”
