A new version of the Ford Focus will debut in 2017, but its styling won’t look too different from the current car. Ford group vice president Raj Nair told Autocar that the fourth-generation Focus will continue the look of the current model. Speaking at the Geneva auto show, Nair told Autocar that the “sleek look of a coupe” seen on the current Ford Focus roofline would continue, “for quite some time.”
“Owners talk about rational reasons for purchase, but a fair percentage buy for emotional reasons like styling,” he said. Nonetheless, Nair said that the design direction for the next Ford Focus hasn’t yet been finalized.
Overall, Ford is reluctant to drastically change the design of the next Focus for fear of alienating current owners. The automaker claims the Ford Focus is the best-selling nameplate in the world, discouraging the company from changing anything and breaking that streak. Ford sold 1.1 million copies of the Focus globally last year, with a total of 12 million in sales since the car launched in 1998.
The arrival of an all-new Ford Focus by 2017 would make perfect sense, as the car recently underwent a mid-cycle refresh. In the U.S. market, updates for the 2015 Ford Focus (pictured) include new front and rear styling, smarter interior trim, more technologies, revised suspension tuning, and the addition of a 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine.
While it’s a sales success globally, within the U.S. the Ford Focus is not quite at the top of its segment. The Focus finished 2013 as the fifth best-selling compact car, with 234,570 sales last year, and so far this year the car remains in that position with 27,929 vehicles sold through the end of February.
