Report: Lexus Flagship Coupe to be called SC, F Version Packs 600+ HP

Yesterday we reported that a production version of the Lexus LF-LC concept is in the works, likely with a hybrid powertrain. Now a new report from our colleagues at Motor Trend says that this gas-electric powertrain will be joined by a high-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine for an F version of this flagship two-door.

MT also says that this coupe will revive the Lexus SC name, debunking previous rumors that it would be called LC. The high-performance Lexus SC F will be powered by a twin-turbo version of the 5.0-liter V-8 in the new Lexus RC F coupe, and this powertrain could make more than 600 hp. The hybrid version is also in the works and may make around 500 hp, and the Lexus SC will also have a naturally aspirated V-8 as the base engine, possibly producing around 450 hp.

Underpinning this new Lexus SC will be the next-generation Lexus LS sedan platform. This full-size luxury sedan is slated for a redesign within the next few years, and the rumor is that it will transition from its luxo-barge image to adopt much sportier aspirations. A possible LS F variant could share its twin-turbo V-8 with the SC F, and the new LS should continue to offer a hybrid variant to replace the existing LS 600hL.

Lexus’ F division won’t rest on its laurels with these two new models, though, as it’s got another trick up its sleeve in the ultra-high-performance Lexus RC FS that’s reported to debut in 2017. This new “FS” designation is meant to be one level above F models and will compete with AMG Black Series and Audi RS models. The RC FS will have the same twin-turbocharged V-8 from the SC F and LS F, which should make for some insane performance from the compact RC coupe. The long-rumored Lexus GS F is also still in the cards, and will likely use a slightly uprated version of the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 for an output of around 500 hp.

Stay tuned for more news over the coming months about the Lexus SC and these other exciting developments within the Lexus pipeline.
