Kia is pitched as the sportier alternative to the related Hyundai brand, and this may gain more credence in 2016 with the arrival of a sporty Kia GT coupe similar to the Kia GT Concept that was shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. According to a report from Auto Express, Kia is hoping to put a sporty coupe on sale by the end of 2016.
The AE report cites Kia’s Vice President of overseas marketing Soon-Nam Lee as confirming plans to build a GT, targeting late 2016 or early 2017 as a launch date. Although the Kia GT Concept from 2011 was on a rear-wheel-drive platform, AE speculates that this will not translate into production since the only rear-wheel-drive Kia platform is for the much larger K9 sedan that will be called K900 when it comes to the U.S. early next year. Instead, this Kia GT Coupe is more likely to be front-wheel-drive. That could mean it will share its platform with the Kia Cadenza sedan.
The Kia GT Concept was a four-door-coupe powered by a 390-hp, 3.3-liter V-6 mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Its styling was swoopy and bold, with a cab-rearward design, suicide rear doors, bulging shoulders, and a long hood that was supposedly inspired by 1970s-era GT cars. If the production car comes to fruition, we hope the Kia GT Concept’s dramatic lines won’t be watered down too much. It’s unclear whether the model will remain a four-door coupe or if it will become a traditional two-door design.
Given that it’s been two years since the original Kia GT Concept, we wouldn’t be surprised to see another Kia concept in the same vein sometime this auto show season. A Kia spokesman told us the company has no comment at this time.
