We love the drool-inducing 2015 Jaguar F-Type coupe, which made its splash debut at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show approximately one year after the F-Type convertible was shown in Paris. According to Jaguar design director Ian Callum, we can safely expect high-performance F-Type RS and RS GT to round out this lovely new litter of kitties.
“Our obligation is to maximize the opportunity in the car in every direction,” Callum told Autocar. “It is clear that the platform is very capable. Whatever the powertrain, the body will work with it.”
Callum is right to emphasize the value of this body design: the 2015 Jaguar F-Type coupe is simply breathtaking. It also comes in a nice variety of powertrain trims at present, including the base supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, the same supercharged V-6 tuned up to 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque for the F-Type S, and lastly the F-Type R’s range-topping 5.0-liter V-8 that gnashes its supercharged teeth with a brutal 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque.
Demand for a Jaguar F-Type RS or RS GT would undoubtedly be high considering the level of buzz and positive reviews for Jaguar’s new coupe, and the British automaker intends to strategically draw out the release process. “We’ve shot all our bullets on day one in the past,” global marketing director Steven de Ploey told Autocar. “We now have a well-balanced model cycle plan for each car, upward, downwards and sideways. With the F-type, the R-S is one of those possibilities.”
Judging by what Jaguar has shown us recently with the high-performance variant XFR-S sedan and XKR-S coupe, we are chomping at the bit for details on future F-Type RS and RS GT models. The 2014 Jaguar XFR-S uses the F-Type R’s 5.0-liter V-8, which represents an additional 40 hp and 41 lb-ft of torque over the XFR, and helps launch it to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Top speed comes in at a cool, electronically-limited 186 mph. The same tuned engine is featured in the 2014 XKR-S coupe, which can reach 60 mph 0.2 seconds quicker than its four-door XFR-S sibling.
Since it seems like Jaguar may have already maxed out the potential 5.0-liter V-8 and put it to work in multiple models (including the 2014 Jaguar XJR), it is unclear from where any future high-performance F-Type could get any additional power, if at all.
Instead, we expect that Jaguar will more readily pursue a track-focused RS GT model that reduces weight and aerodynamics with plenty of aluminum and carbon fiber upgrades. If it follows the precedent set by the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT, a future F-Type RS GT would get a giant carbon fiber air wing, rear diffusers, dive planes, and lighter forged alloy wheels. We’d also expect stiffer suspension, adaptive dampers, and upgraded brakes.
Including destination fees, pricing for the 2015 Jaguar F-Type coupe begins at $65,895, while the F-Type S coupe costs $77,895. The thrashing F-Type R coupe leads the litter at $99,895.
