The National Post reports that, according to suppliers briefed on the automaker’s latest product plans, GM will replace the DTS in 2012 with an all-new large sedan dubbed the XTS. The XTS will be Cadillac’s largest four-door sedan, and will compete with the bigger luxury cars from Audi, BMW, and Lexus. Production of the XTS is slated to begin in December 2011 at GM’s Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada.
Combining rumors we’ve heard in the last year or so, we can create a pretty decent picture of what Cadillac’s lineup will look like come 2012. The CTS wagon and SRX crossover will be available shortly. We know for sure that the Cadillac CTS Coupe will be here next summer. By 2011, we should see a compact, entry-level luxury sedan slotted below the CTS that may spawn hatchback, coupe, and convertible derivatives, giving Cadillac a competitor to the BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS.
There are several question marks for Cadillac’s lineup. Most importantly however, is what will happen to the Escalade? Although it has been eclipsed by the new CTS as GM’s best-selling vehicle (even with the extended length ESV and truck-like EXT body styles included, the CTS outsells the Escalade nameplate by more than 7000 units), the Escalade embodies the in-your-face stylishness Cadillac has come to represent. With stringent fuel economy rules approaching quickly in the coming years, will GM transform the Escalade into a crossover underpinned by the Lambda platform used by Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave?
Other open issues include the arguable likelihood of a production version of the Cadillac Converj, whether a replacement for the XLR roadster (discontinued after the 2009 model year) is being developed, and when (if ever) GM’s High Performance Vehicle Operations unit will return to produce V-series iterations of Cadillac’s models.
The National Post also reports that the XTS may share its platform with two other GM vehicles–one of which will be the completely redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Impala. Although the Impala will be seven years old by 2013, GM was forced to put the project on the back burner due to financial hardship, pushing the launch date of the new vehicle back.
