Report: Audi Prepping a High-Riding Quattro Coupe Crossover?

It’s code-named the Q35, has all-wheel drive, a lot of power, and will commemorate the 35thanniversary for the creation of Audi’s AWD system. Only one question remains–what is it?

We hear today from AutoBild that Audi is working on a revival of the famous Audi Sport Quattro that took the rallying world (and the car-buying public) by storm back in the 80s, code-naming the new car Q35 (for 35 years of quattro). The two-door coupe will allegedly slot between the TT and the R8 in both size and price.

Under the hood, we hear the car will have a 380-hp turbocharged five-cylinder engine (likely the powerplant from the TT RS) mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system. Audi will reportedly keep weight low, perhaps as light as 3000 pounds, through extensive use of alloys and carbon fiber. The design will reportedly be something close to the Quattro Concept from 2010, meaning it’ll strongly evoke the 80’s Sport Quattro’s boxy look and signature c-pillar.

There’s only one issue for this Audi, and it’s that there’s already a 380-hp, all-wheel-drive coupe in the Volkswagen Group’s stable that’s priced between the Audi TT and R8–the iconic Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. To get around this, the Q35 is reportedly a very different car than the 911. It’s been suggested that the car may sit higher–in some facsimile of the Audi Allroad wagon–and the Q35 may later spawn a plug-in hybrid model. Audi also only hopes to sell 10,000 units a year worldwide.

Given that it’s said to be timed to quattro’s 35th anniversary, the Q35 will probably bow in 2015.
