With the XTS and ATS sedans done and on sale, Cadillac’s next big project is the upcoming third-generation CTS sedan, and it’s no small task. But General Motors design chief Ed Welburn says that Cadillac has given its best-selling sedan a new look that promises to be both “more sophisticated” and “more premium.”
The Cadillac CTS has come quite a long way since it was first released in 2002–the sedan ushered in a new era of Cadillac design, and you can see pieces of its angular, chiseled look to this day. However, the CTS still makes a big departure, curb appeal-wise, from its German and Japanese competitors in the sport luxury sedan market. But the second-generation Cadillac CTS is beginning to age, and the first-generation model is looking antiquated already. Add in the fact that ATS and XTS sedans have leapfrogged over the CTS in terms of looks, and the wreath and crest’s midsizer looks overdue for an update.
Welburn told Automotive News that we’ll see something similar to 2007–a more mature look– when the new car bows late next year. The Cadillac CTS will also grow half a size, in an attempt to distance itself from the ATS sedan and fully compete with cars like the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. Welburn told AN to expect more sophisticated body surfacing, rather than the sharp angles that have come to define Cadillac’s Art & Science design philosophy. He says that the CTS “will continue to be very dramatic, but I think in some ways even more sophisticated.”
We’ve already spotted the new Cadillac CTS running laps on Germany’s Nürburgring and could only tell that the car will grow in size – the camouflage kept us from seeing any design details.
