Recall Central: 2007-2009 Mercedes-Benz E350 Wagon, 2012-2013 BMW X5 and X6 Models

Mercedes-Benz is recalling select E350 wagons for issues with their rear suspensions, and BMW is recalling certain X5 and X6 sport utility vehicles for issues with the power steering system.

2007-2009 Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic Wagon

The Problem: Mercedes-Benz is recalling some 2007-2009 E350 4Matic wagon models for rear suspension problems. A connecting rod in the load-leveling rear suspension could break, which can cause the rear suspension’s load-leveling sensor to constantly read that the suspension is sagging. Such a malfunction would cause the rear air suspension to continuously fill with air, making the ride very stiff and potentially bursting the baffles. If this happens, the driver may lose control of the car.

The Fix: Mercedes-Benz will notify dealers and owners of the issue and repair the suspensions with new connecting rods that aren’t prone to breaking. The repairs are at no cost to the owner, and the program will begin in August. Owners can also call Mercedes-Benz for more information, at 1-201-573-0350.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 3,613 vehicles: all 2007-2009 Mercedes E-Class Wagons without Airmatic suspensions.

2012-2013 BMW X5 and X6

The Problem: BMW is recalling some 2012 and 2013 X5 and X6 SUVs for a possible power steering leak. In the affected cars, an improperly machined steering gear housing could force the rack-and-pinion guide out of place, which would start a power steering fluid leak. If this does happen, the power steering assist could be lost, making it much harder to steer the vehicle; the power steering boot could burst; or fluid could drip onto the exhaust manifold, causing smoke or fire. The recall was issued as a result of internal testing, and no customer issues have been reported yet.

The Fix: BMW will notify dealers of the issue this month, and issue customer notifications by the end of next month. BMW will then replace all of the affected parts on all of the affected models. As all of the cars are currently under warranty, the repairs or replacements will be free of charge. Customers can call BMW for more information, at 1-800-525-7417.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 2,642 vehicles, including 2012 BMW X5 xDrive35ds, 2013 BMW X5s (all engines), and 2013 BMW X6s (all engines) made between April 20 and May 29, 2012.
