Production of Japanese Honda Civic Type R Sedan Ends, Euro Hatchback on Sale

Honda has some good and bad news for Japanese Civic enthusiasts. Sadly, the automaker announced it would end production of the hot Civic Type R sedan come August, but it will continue to import the Civic Type R Euro hatchback for at least another year.

After three years in production, Honda has decided to stop selling the third-generation Civic Type R sedan. The third-generation Type R sedan, sold only in Japan, used a higher horsepower version of the naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine available in the Civic Si. In this form, it puts out 225 horsepower and 158 pound-feet of torque. This increased power was channeled to the ground through a six-speed manual transmission.

Civic Type R sedans received several other key performance upgrades. The car was lighter and more rigid than a standard Civic sedan, and also used a specially tuned suspension. Lightweight 18-inch aluminum wheels with high-performance tires provided better cornering, and massive 17-inch disc brakes provide increased stopping power.

Honda announced it will discontinue production of the car come August 2010, but revealed it will continue to import the two-door hatchback Civic Type R Euro to Japan. Honda started importing the car as a limited edition model last November, and due to the car’s overwhelming sales success, Honda decided to import 2010 models as well.

Unlike the Type R sedan model, the Type R Euro uses the same 197-horsepower, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder as found in the North American Civic Si. The hatchback does, however, receive a lightened and stiffened chassis, along with the suspension upgrades found on the Type R sedan.

Expect the 2010 Civic Type R Euro hatchback to arrive at Honda’s Japanese dealers later this fall.
