Porsche 918 Spyder Final Performance Figures Exceed Predictions

Last-minute fine tuning of the Porsche 918 Spyder sends it from 0-62 mph in 2.6 seconds.

For the roughly 600 buyers who are anxiously awaiting delivery of their Porsche 918 Spyder this December, there is unfortunately no way to make the time pass more quickly. However, thanks to some final tuning from Porsche, the 918 will make up for the long wait with improved performance numbers that surpass original measurements.

Although total power will remain at 887 hp from the Porsche 918’s V-8 engine and twin electric motors, acceleration figures have improved thanks to some last-minute performance tuning. The Porsche 918 Spyder, when equipped with the weight-reducing Weissach package, shaves 0.2 second off its 0-62 mph sprint, which is now possible in 2.6 seconds. Acceleration to 124 mph is improved to 7.2 seconds (0.5 second quicker), and the 918 reaches 186 mph in 19.9 seconds (2.1 seconds quicker).

“We have now used all options available to electrify the 918 Spyder, working right up to the last minute to do so,” said Porsche 918 Spyder program senior vice president Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, in a statement.

All-electric performance figures are improved, as well. Using only battery power, the Weissach-fitted Porsche 918 Spyder can now accelerate to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds, a 0.9-second improvement over the previous claim of 7.0 seconds. Without the Weissach package, which cuts the car’s weight by 77 pounds, 0-62 mph acceleration using only the electric motors rises to 6.2 seconds. The Porsche 918 Spyder produces no emissions while using only its electric drivetrain, and can reach a top speed of 93 mph before switching to hybrid power.

Having previously set a staggering lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, we can only hope that Porsche will soon get another opportunity to test the 918 Spyder with this improved tuning and performance.  In fact, Porsche officials previously told us they think the 918 can set an even quicker lap time with more practice.

The Weissach package, which brings the cost for the 918 Spyder to $929,000 without destination fees, replaces various interior and exterior elements with more lightweight materials. Air conditioning and radio are removed, carbon fiber is used on the roof, rear wings, mirrors, and windscreen frames, Alcantara replaces interior leather, and lightweight magnesium wheels further reduce weight. The Weissach package in total removes about 77 pounds from the stock 918 Spyder.

Approximately two-thirds of the 918-car production run are already spoken for, and Porsche is eager to sell the remaining vehicles. With the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari already sold out, many wonder why more Porsche 918 Spyders have not been claimed. For perspective, Ferrari plans to produce 499 LaFerrari units, while McLaren is building 375 P1 units; Porsche far surpasses these production numbers with 918 planned vehicles, although its $845,000 starting price is the most affordable of the trio by a significant margin.
