Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding the upcoming 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, with General Motors itself even getting into the game with photos of the trucks undergoing testing. There’s also a lot of interest as far as what will be under the hood. While we’ve known for about two years that the trucks would receive the fifth-generation version of GM’s small block V-8s, we haven’t received official confirmation of official specifications, or what exactly it would look like, until now.
A little over a week ago, a local business newspaper in the Buffalo, New York area did a piece on General Motors’ investment in its Tonawanda, NY to add a third engine line to make a new V-8 engine. The fact that Tonawanda would be one of the sources for the new engine was announced more than two years ago.
While we still don’t have official information such as output numbers, fuel economy, and even specific displacements, we do now have what we believe to be a photo of the fifth-generation GM small block V-8. The photo shows plant manager Steve Finch standing next to the new engine.
It is clearly related to the fourth-generation GM small block V-8, with oval-shaped valve covers, and valve cover–mounted ignition coils. The biggest visual difference from the fourth-generation engines are the prominent “lumps” on the valve covers. These may house the new direct injectors. While it may seem counter-intuitive to put the injectors underneath the valve covers, the placement makes sense from the standpoint of isolating the “clickety” noise characteristic of direct injection, as well as the fact that they will not be a part that will require frequent maintenance.
