Paris 2012: McLaren Unveils P1 Hypercar, Withholds the Juicy Details

We’ve known for some while that the McLaren P1 hypercar will be something of a successor to the crazy F1 supercar of the ’90s, and it’s been a few days since we saw the first official shots of the McLaren P1 concept. McLaren went further today, debuting the P1 on stage at the Paris Motor Show, but is still holding the production car’s engine details close to its metaphorical chest.

As we reported this morning, the McLaren P1 is rumored to have a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine (same as the MP4-12C) tuned to 700 horsepower, and then a pair of 150-hp electric motors to boot. Total power output, for those of you not skilled in mental math, is a round (and crazy) 1000 hp, enough to topple the upcoming Ferrari F70 (rumored to have 920 hp) and the 795-hp Porsche 918 Spyder. The rumors also flew that the car would have a carbon fiber monocoque, an aluminum pushrod suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, and active aerodynamics.

The rumors, not surprisingly, are true: in addition to a dual-clutch transmission, the McLaren P1 will have an active air brake (like the MP4-12C), an F1-inspired pushrod suspension setup, and McLaren’s MonoCage carbon fiber tub setup. Capping that all off is a body that looks like a futuristic interpretation of the otherwise conservative MP4-12C coupe, with a heaping helping of naked carbon fiber, LED light piping, and air scoops.

This’ll all run you about $1.1 million–because such technology and speed doesn’t come cheap–and production of the McLaren P1, like that of the Ferrari and Porsche competitors, will be severely limited, in this case to just 500 units.
