Overboosted: 2013 Ford Focus ST Adds Torque With the Touch of a Button

The Ford Focus ST will feature an overboost function allowing for increased boost up to 4500 rpm when it arrives on dealer lots toward the end of the year. “Overboosting” the engine won’t increase the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine’s peak horsepower (252) or torque rating (270 lb-ft), but does allow for extra boost for up to 15 seconds over a larger section of the power band

Peak torque gains will increase up to 7.4 percent. The Focus ST hot hatch comes with the first North American EcoBoost engine to feature overboost. Ford engineers also made sure the cooling system was able to tackle the extra heat created by the extra torque while overboosting the engine.

“The turbo itself is specified for sustained, high-output performance, but they’ve programmed the car’s computer to dial in more boost past 3000 rpm to give it that extra something,” said Lisa Schoder, engineer and marketing manager for Focus ST, in a press release. “Overboost is cool in that it tweaks more acceleration through the turbo for brief periods for performance-hungry drivers.”

Ford hasn’t announced the Focus ST’s on-sale date, but dealers are taking orders now. The hot hatch starts at $24,495, including a $795 destination charge, and tops out at just under $30,000 for the top-spec ST3 trim level plus the $895 moonroof, which includes Recaro leather seats, HID headlights, and a Sony sound system. Ford will also give the first 1000 customers who preorder the Focus ST by August 20 a free GoPro HD Hero2 Motorsports Edition camera.
