General Motors’ in-vehicle communication service has announced two new navigational features to enhance its existing turn-by-turn service. The first, OnStar’s new “Destination Download” feature, will allow OnStar subscribers with screen-based navigation systems to input their destination while on the go via a simple press of the OnStar button. Once connected to OnStar, an advisor will ask for destination information, which is then downloaded directly to the subscribers navigation screen within seconds.
In the past, drivers were forced to bring their vehicles to a complete stop or place it in park before they could enter a new destination into their navigation systems. Additionally, OnStar’s new “eNav” feature will allow subscribers with a turn-by-turn navigation-capable vehicle to find a destination on MapQuest.com and then have that destination sent to a vehicle’s OnStar system. This should come in handy for those who favor mapping out their vacation trips online.
GM says “Destination Download” will be available on more than 80 percent of its screen-based navigation vehicles. Likewise, OnStar’s “eNav” feature will be available retroactively on 2.7 million current Turn-by-Turn capable GM vehicles.
XM NavTraffic will now be available on the navigation screen for 22 GM models as well. The real-time traffic information system will allow drivers to see how dense traffic is on nearby roads, or closer to their destination. Color coding will make it easy to determine the traffic density with a quick glance.
