Whether you’re talking TV, movies or real-life, when the role for definitive full-size premium luxury is called for, nine times out of 10, the role is filled by a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The starting price for the 2014 S550 is $93,825, including $925 destination charge. All S550 models come with a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8 producing a substantial 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. But much beyond that, the options start adding up fast. We were able to bring the tab for our custom-configured S up to $127,324. That included the Sport Package which included 20-inch wheels and sport body styling, adding $6650 to the bottom line. We also added more than $6000 interior upgrades, including the $4500 Premium 1 Package, including front seats with massage, Keyless-Go, Parktronic park assist, power rear window sunshades. Just for the sake of virtual indulgence, we added power outboard rear memory seats for $1515.
We also popped for the $6400 Burmester premium audio system, and rear-seat entertainment system for $2650. Finally, we added the $2800 Driver Assistance Package and the $4450 Magic Body Control system.
Did we really “need” all of those options? No. But does anyone really “need” an S-Class, when you can get a Hyundai Equus or even a Yukon XL or Suburban for far less that would still work perfectly well for executive transport?
