Nissan began teasing its all-new 2013 Sentra earlier this year, and now we’re one step closer to it hitting the roads – the Japanese automaker has announced that the new Sentra will be built at its Canton, Mississippi assembly plant.
We’ve actually already gotten a good look at what the next Sentra will be – Nissan pulled the wraps off of the Chinese-market Sylphy sedan (pictured here) at this year’s Beijing show. It’s expected that our Sentra will be a match for that car, although with different equipment and packaging. We already spotted the U.S.-spec Sentra out testing, decked out in a zebra-stripe livery. Powering the Sylphy is a 1.8-liter I-4 mated to a continuously variable transmission, but we wouldn’t be surprised if U.S.-market cars gain an optional 2.0-liter engine and manual transmission. Upmarket touches like LED taillights and high-end tech have also been promised to make their way into the 2013 Sentra.
In preparation of the new compact sedan’s introduction, 1000 new workers will be hired in Canton, bringing the full workforce count up to 4500. Currently, the plant also builds the Altima, Titan, Frontier, Xterra, and Armada. The 2013 Sentra will also be built in Aguascalientes, Mexico, where the current car is built. Nissan has promised to reveal more on the 2013 Sentra this summer, with an on-sale date for the car sometime early next year.
Nissan isn’t the only one looking to ramp up production – Chrysler is looking to add more workers to its Toledo Assembly Complex to better keep up with demand for the Jeep Wrangler, according to Automotive News. The Wrangler is enjoying some of its best-ever sales, with 56,410 units sold through just the first five months of 2012 already. As part of a site expansion, Chrysler is investing some $500 million into the Toledo facility and hoping to add another 1100 employees there by the end of next year.
