An all-electric version of the Nissan NV200 compact cargo van will soon hit American roads in a test program between Nissan and FedEx Express delivery. The test will take place in Washington, D.C., where the e-NV200 will be part of FedEx Express’ fleet rotation to see if an all-electric van might be viable for use in similar conditions in the future.
The Nissan e-NV200 is based on the NV200 cargo van that is now on sale in the U.S. and in use as a taxi in New York City. It is powered by a similar electric drivetrain as the Nissan Leaf hatchback, meaning that its driving range is estimated to be around the Leaf’s 73-mile range. Also like the Leaf, the Nissan e-NV200 can be charged with either 120V or 240V electric outlets, or a quick charge which replenishes 80 percent of battery capacity in 30 minutes.
Otherwise, the Nissan e-NV200 is similar to a standard, gasoline-powered NV200 with its front-wheel-drive construction and spacious cargo area. A passenger version of the Nissan e-NV200 will go on sale in Europe this year, and similar e-NV200 commercial vans have already undergone fleet testing in Japan, Singapore, the U.K., and Brazil.
This eco-friendly cargo van also goes along with FedEx’s EarthSmart sustainability program, since the company is putting a priority on increasing the number of zero-emissions vehicles in its fleet.
We may see a version of this electric cargo van in the U.S. within a few years, as Nissan has said that it will provide a zero-emissions NV200 taxi (concept pictured here) for New York City at some point in the future. A passenger version of the Nissan e-NV200 will not be sold in the U.S., and this viability testing will presumably be a factor in Nissan’s decision on whether or not this electric cargo van will be sold to consumers and businesses on our shores.
