For years, American enthusiasts pined longingly for the legendary performance of the Nissan Skyline GT-R. In the late 1990s, some gray-market right-hand-drive models trickled in to the country, but the car remained a forbidden fruit for the bulk of enthusiasts. But starting in 2009, Nissan made things right by offering the R35 GT-R to U.S. buyers. Not only is the car staggeringly fast on the street, but also a formidable competitor on the track. Nissan revealed the latest evolution of its track-going GT-Rs with the 2014 GT-R Nismo GT500, slated for competition in the Super GT Racing series in Japan, at the Suzuka circuit, southwest of Tokyo.
For the 2014 race season, cars in the GT500 class of Super GT racing will be based on the same technical regulations as the German Touring Car Championship series (DTM), although engine specifications and regulations differ slightly between the two series. The 2014 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT500 will also be shown at the Nismo Festival at Japan’s Fuji Speedway in early December 2013. Participating race teams will be released at a later date.
The production version of the Nissan GT-R has seen steady, consistent performance improvements since its 2009 debut. Although outwardly, the changes were subtle, horsepower has increased by 65 hp from 2009 to 2014 from 480 to 545. Acceleration times from 0-60 have dropped from an already very quick 3.2 seconds to a staggering 2.7 seconds.
