Both the front subframes and rear axles from the 1999-2003 Windstar have appeared to be especially susceptible to corrosion, particularly in the “salt belt” states where road salt is used extensively. The NHTSA is conducting two investigations and the ongoing probe could eventually lead to recalls. Up to 900,000 vehicles could require repairs.
Not unfamiliar to being recalled, the Windstar, which was offered from 1994-2003, has already dealt with 10 recalls. The latest was in 2009 over potential fire-starting cruise-control deactivation switches.
During the Windstar’s run, Ford built 2.3 million minivans.
