Despite the belief of many that the Volkswagen Phaeton full-size luxury sedan was the answer to a question nobody asked, VW development chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser said that an all-new Phaeton was in the works, and despite superficial appearances, that the business case for it was quite good, as it serves as a test-bed for putting new technologies into production, and ultimately putting them into more mass-market Volkswagen vehicles, Britain’s Autocar reports.
Unfortunately, the business case for the BlueSport roadster was not as compelling, according to Neusser, and it’s unlikely the two-seater will ever make it to production, although he says that he “personally likes the idea, as do all the engineers” but that the segment was very small, and shrinking.
In addition to the Phaeton, Neusser said to expect a lot more Volkswagen plug-in models, both hybrids and full electrics. Neusser said he sees a day when every Volkswagen model will offer a plug-in variant. In the area of full-electrics, he expects a capacity breakthrough in 2016 which will allow 50 percent more range than present electrics, and another by 2020 which will enable a range triple that of most electric cars. He believed 2020 may be the tipping point for mass-market adoption of electrics, as he expects a large-scale charging infrastructure to be in place by that point.
