“To match the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve been having, we have unseasonably hot cars,” said Mercedes-Benz U.S.A. CEO Stephen Cannon. One of the hottest, of course, is the 2013 SL65 AMG. “Any year when you get to launch a new SL-Class is going to be a great year.”
For the latest go-fast SL roadster, the wizards of AMG have installed a massive engine. In this case it’s a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 engine, good for 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission, which has a wet clutch pack in place of the usual torque converter.
Mercedes says its roadster rocket will hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, while its top speed is electronically curtailed at 186 mph. Executives note that the V-12 car isn’t much faster than the V-8-powered SL63 AMG, but say that SL65 customers want the exclusivity of having the pricier twelve-cylinder model.
The car also gets AMG-spec brakes, suspension, and steering to provide handling on par with the straight-line performance. You can spot the SL65 from a distance thanks to its unique wheels, front splitter and rear diffuser, and massive quad exhaust tips. Occupants are privy to leather-covered AMG sport seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and the Racetimer screen that lets enthusiasts measure their cars’ performance.
