The new 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon rolled onto the New York show floor on Wednesday with more space for your stuff in the back and a subtle change in Acura’s styling language right up front.
Look closely at the front of the TSX Sport Wagon and you may notice something’s a little off. Acura has caught a lot of flack for its new angular styling direction, particularly in the shield-like grilles. The company has taken some small steps to rectify that on the TSX Sport Wagon by making the grille a bit narrower, enlarging the horizontal slats in the beak-like opening to fill space and changing its border to chrome instead of silver plastic. In total, this tones down the grille and makes it less jarring than the old style. Expect this look to carry over to the TSX sedan in the near future.
Underneath the new wagon body, the TSX Sport Wagon is basically a base model TSX sedan. The “Sport Wagon” name is a bit of a misnomer, since it lacks two of the sedan’s sportiest options: a manual transmission and a V-6. Approaching the wagon market cautiously, Acura has saddled the Sport Wagon with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission only. The company isn’t ready to discuss numbers yet, but in the TSX sedan that engine is good for 201 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque and gets 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Though the wagon body no doubt adds a bit of weight, we expect the Sport Wagon to perform about the same, and Acura says it’s targeting 30 mpg highway.
Acura isn’t talking pricing yet, either, but we imagine it will come in above the base model TSX, which starts around $30,000, so the Sport Wagon will likely start in the low- to mid-$30,000 range. It will, of course, come with all the luxury amenities expected in the segment including navigation, leather, a premium stereo, and more. Acura has its sights set on the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series Wagon and the Volvo V50. Do you think the TSX Sport Wagon has what it takes to compete?
