Mugen Euro’s general manger Colin Whittamore wants to develop a hot-hatch version of the Honda Jazz, know to us in the U.S. as the Honda Fit. The practical five-door hatch isn’t the first car that comes to mind when hearing the words “hot-hatch” but Whittamore wants to develop it.
“Always in the back of our mind as a car that we’d like to do is the Jazz,” Whittamore told AutoCar.
Mugen, already offers styling and tuning upgrades for the Fit in Japan, but they do little to increase performance. But Mugen wants to develop a high-performance version — using either the Mugen-developed Mugen CR-Z’s supercharged hybrid powerplant or the all-motor 2.0 liter iVTEC I-4 similar to the one used in the last generation Civic Si and Euro Civic Type-R. Either choice would develop just under 200 hp for the subcompact hatch. Which drivertrain would you rather see in a high-performance Fit?
The stock Fit already uses a 1.5 liter similar to the CR-Z’s but without Honda’s IMA system that makes 117 hp. The Fit Hybrid – not available in the US – uses a 1.3 liter with the IMA system and churns out a total of 101 hp. Whittamore says is “wouldn’t be much of a stretch” to fit the supercharged CR-Z’s drivetrain in the Jazz.
