A visit to Mitsubishi’s U.S. site finds the Lancer Evolution still listed as a 2008 model – a fact that might incite worry in the hostile automotive market these days. Thankfully, Inside Line has discovered that there is nothing to fear from the absence of the 2009 Evo X on Mitsubishi’s website.
Maurice Durand, a Mitsubishi spokesman, told Inside Line that the Evo will skip the 2009 model year due to a late 2008 introduction-but the 2010 is still on track. “We didn’t start full out of the gate with the Evo X,” said Durand. “We launched the GSR in February , which would have made for a shortened 2009 model year.”
The decision to continue selling the 2008 instead the 2009 model was made before the current credit crises caused sales to tank, but it was reaffirmed by the economic slowdown. “Dealer traffic is good on the Evo, but the credit problem has hurt the ability to translate traffic into Evo sales,” Durand said.
According to Durand, 2009 was planned to be a carryover anyway; future refinements were planned for the 2010 model year all along. Although Durand refused to say what some of the refinements would entail, he did say the 2010 Evo X will launch this summer.
