No Mirage: BMW Shows Off Next 3 Series In Death Valley

BMW has been trying to beat spy photographers at their own game in recent years, releasing its own shots of upcoming models wrapped in camouflage. Under the guise of explain its hot-weather testing, BMW is now showing off a camo-clad version of the next-generation 3 Series.

The video follows BMW’s Heat Testing Team to Death Valley, California, where they put the cars through a rigorous set of high-temperature tests. With the mercury climbing upwards of 110 degrees, the team drives a test loop that includes a number of grades and check high-temperature idling, to make sure all systems will operate normally while baking in the sun. BMW tests every car sold in the U.S. in Death Valley.

The convoy in this clip includes two X5s, two 5 Series GTs, an X6, and the fully-clad 3 Series. Although we can’t tell much about the final look of the new 3er, we are treated to a number of driving shots and a quick glimpse of a cloaked interior while it undergoes the hot soak test — where it is left out in the heat with all windows and doors closed for 90 minutes to see how well the air conditioner can keep up.

Make sure to check out the video below for the skinny on how BMW does its hot-weather testing, and a glimpse at the next 3 Series, set to debut next year.
