Some internship programs consist mainly of making copies and fetching coffee, but a team of BMW Group apprentices leveraged their time learning from engineers in Munich and Dingolfing to craft this one-off pickup truck. Based on a standard Mini Paceman S, the Adventure looks at how the urban-oriented Paceman could be adapted to life on wilder terrain.
The most obvious change is that the Mini Adventure’s rear has been hacked off, leaving an open pickup bed aft of the front seats that is lined with diamond-plated metal. Yet the Adventure is not just about adding space for carrying tools and gear, as its suspension has been raised so car, which is equipped with Mini’s All4 all-wheel-drive system, can work on rugged off-road trails. Mini says the car could be used on, “gravel roads, through muddy tracks, or on desert trails.” It even has a snorkel air intake, mounted high on the A-pillar, so the car can ford streams and rivers without hydrolocking the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four engine.
On the roof, the Mini Adventure also sports a new rack carries a full-size spare wheel and tire, as well as a set of powerful lights for night-time wilderness exploration. Off-road tires and Jungle Green paint complete this car’s transformation into a miniature Land Rover.
Before you grab your checkbook and head to the nearest Mini showroom — or start hacking apart your own Paceman — note that Mini says this is simply a one-off design and engineering exercise. There are absolutely no plans to put the Mini Adventure into production. The standard 2015 Mini Paceman, meanwhile, recently received a mild refresh at the Beijing auto show, just a few days after the 2015 Mini Countryman was updated at the New York show.
