Lamborghini has built the 1000th copy of the Aventador LP700-4 supercar, and if that sounds like a small figure, consider that the Aventador reached that milestone more quickly than previous Lamborghini V-12 flagships.
The Aventador reached the 1000-car milestone after just 15 months of production. The previous V-12 Lamborghini, the Murciélago, took nearly two and a half years to reach that number. For an even starker contrast, consider that in the seven years between 1966 and 1973, Lamborghini built only 763 copies of the V-12-powered Miura.
Owing in part to their lofty prices and performance, Lamborghini’s other V-12 flagship models have never racked up huge sales figures: between 1990 and 2001, Lamborghini built just 2898 copies of the Diablo; and from 2001 through 2010, the company produced 4099 Murciélagos.
The 1000th Aventador was painted Argos Orange. It was delivered today to German architect Hans Scheidecker by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. Like all other examples of Lamborghini’s top supercar, the 1000th car is powered by a 700-hp, 6.5-liter V-12 engine. A seven-speed automated manual transmission sends power to all four wheels. Lamborghini says the Aventador will complete the 0-to-62-mph sprint in 2.9 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 217 mph.
In January, we can expect to see a roadster version of the Lamborghini Aventador introduced at the Detroit auto show. Later at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini will probably introduce a slightly roomier and more comfortable model called the Aventador GT.
Even though Lamborghini production has drastically accelerated compared to older models, the company’s production rate might still seem quite slow overall: Lamborghini builds fewer than five Aventadors each day.
