For quite a while, we’ve heard whispers that Ferrari is developing a track-focused version of the 488 GTB. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but as much as we enjoy driving the regular 488, the possibility of a lighter, more powerful, hardcore version certainly has our attention. Supposedly, the new car, potentially called the 488 GTO, is scheduled to be revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, but it looks like a photo has already leaked.
Ferrari Photo Page says it received this image from the photographers behind the VerssenSpotting Instagram account but that they aren’t sure who the original source is. Assuming the photo is legitimate, it was most likely taken at the private preview event that gave us last week’s leak. Plus, while we can’t say for sure this is the upgraded 488, the teaser images do look very similar to the car here.
According to that leak, this new “Sport Special Series” will have more than 700 hp, making it the most powerful V-8 that Ferrari has ever produced. To reduce the weight as much as possible, it will also use more carbon fiber than we’ve previously seen in a Ferrari road car. Add improved aerodynamics and a track-tuned suspension to the mix, and there’s even a rumor that the new car will be faster than the LaFerrari.
As far as the name goes, we’ve heard from the beginning that this car will be called the 488 GTO. But according to Ferrari Photo Page, even prospective buyers who attended the private preview haven’t been told what it will be called. So while there’s a good chance the hardcore 488 will be a GTO, we wouldn’t be surprised if Ferrari went with a different name.
Based on what we’ve heard, though, no matter what it’s eventually called, this car is going to be an incredible driver’s car.
