If you’re looking for something more unique than the KTM X-Bow or the Ariel Atom, Vuhl’s new 05 lightweight supercar may whet your appetite. Powered by a version of Ford’s 2.0-liter turbo-four EcoBoost engine, the Vuhl 05 is good for 285 hp and 152 mph. Enthusiasts may recognize the EcoBoost I-4 from the 2013 Ford Focus ST.
The Vuhl 05 was created by design firm ETXE, which is headquartered in both Mexico City and Detroit. The lightweight sports car weighs in at just 1598 pounds. The monocoque chassis is made from a combination of extruded and honeycomb aluminum and a chrome-moly steel subframe houses the engine and rear suspension. Body panels are made from RTM reinforced plastic, but buyers can order optional carbon fiber bodywork.
The lightweight materials mean that the mid-mounted turbocharged Ford 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 has little weight to push around. The result from the 285-hp, 310-lb-ft mill is a top speed of 152 mph, a 0 to 62 mph time of 3.7 seconds, and a rear-biased weight distribution of 37 percent front/63 percent rear. Power is sent through a six-speed manual. The 05 rides on OZ alloy wheels – 17 in up front shod in 205/45 Michelin rubber and 18 in with 235/45 rubber in the rear. To further aid in handling, the Ford-powered Vuhl uses unequal length double wishbone front and rear suspension. When things need to come to halt, four-pot alloy calipers grab onto ventilated cross-drilled discs that measure 12.2 in up front and 11.0 in rear.
Inside, the Spartan cabin is all business. ETXE intends for each Vuhl 05 to be specific to its owner, and offer track-day goodies like carbon fiber bucket seats, an electronic data acquisition gauge cluster, and an integrated HD video camera. Since the Vuhl has no roof, a 13.0-in quick release water-resistant suede-covered steering wheel and water-resistant Dinamica suede trim are offered.
Pricing for the Ford-powered Vuhl 05 starts at about €55,000, depending on exact specification. Sales start in North America and Europe later this year.
